Denzel Washington has shared high praise for Paul Mescal’s portrayal of Lucius Verus in the much-anticipated sequel Gladiator 2. Mescal takes on the role of Lucius, the son of Maximus Decimus Meridius (Russell Crowe) and Lucilla (Connie Nielsen), as the sequel continues the legacy of Ridley Scott’s iconic 2000 film. Washington himself stars in the film as Macrinus, a former slave turned power broker who manipulates Lucius’ thirst for vengeance to further his own ambitions in Rome.

In an interview with GQ, Washington spoke about Mescal’s talent and his experience working with the rising star. Washington highlighted Mescal’s natural acting ability, describing him as both a thoughtful and compelling presence on-screen. Even in moments of stillness, Washington found Mescal’s performance captivating.

“[Mescal] knows what he’s doing, he knows how to do it,” Washington said. “It’s easy to work off of him because he’s giving you something. There’s a quiet dignity and a strength and intelligence that he has, even just when he’s standing there.”

A Worthy Successor to Maximus

Washington’s remarks add to the growing anticipation for Mescal’s role as Lucius, who steps into the spotlight as the sequel’s central figure. Much attention has been paid to Mescal’s physical transformation to embody a gladiator’s physique, but Washington’s comments emphasize the depth of his performance. Like Maximus in the original film, Lucius is described as dignified and stoic, qualities that will make him a formidable presence both in and out of the Colosseum.

Lucius’ journey in Gladiator 2 appears to mirror his father’s legacy, as he confronts the corrupt powers that have risen in Rome since Maximus’ death. The sequel promises to pit Lucius against formidable adversaries, including General Marcus Acacius (Pedro Pascal), Emperor Geta (Joseph Quinn), and Emperor Caracalla (Fred Hechinger).

The Role of Macrinus

Washington’s character, Macrinus, adds further intrigue to the narrative. A complex figure, Macrinus serves as Gladiator 2’s equivalent of Proximo (Oliver Reed), though he is described as being more ambitious and politically savvy than his predecessor. His dynamic with Lucius is expected to be a key element of the story, with the two initially aligned in their rebellion against Rome’s corrupt leadership.

However, as the balance of power shifts, tensions between Lucius and Macrinus may rise, potentially setting them against one another. This unpredictability heightens the drama, with Washington and Mescal’s performances poised to make their shared scenes a highlight of the film.

A Promising Sequel to a Classic

Gladiator 2 faces high expectations, given the original film’s acclaimed conclusion. While some fans have expressed skepticism about revisiting the story, the cast and early details suggest a thoughtful continuation of the Gladiator legacy. With Ridley Scott back at the helm and a powerhouse cast that includes Mescal, Washington, Pascal, and Nielsen, the sequel is shaping up to be a compelling exploration of revenge, power, and legacy.

As audiences await its release, Washington’s praise for Mescal sets the stage for a performance that will carry the weight of the original film while charting a new path for the franchise. Gladiator 2 promises to deliver not only epic battles but also nuanced character dynamics that will keep viewers riveted until the very end.
